Funio is saying “Goodbye” to PHP4
PHP4 is getting old… cPanel recently announced that it will no longer support PHP4, so Funio will be following the trend in the next few weeks. We want to keep a stable and solid infrastructure, and the removal of PHP4 participates to this desire.
Indeed, there are risks in keeping using PHP4 that is not being updated anymore; risks such as security flaws and performance issues. Our customers can easily become victims of hackers which would ultimately create slow downs on servers.
Additionally, since PHP4 is no longer supported by our providers and will soon be removed from cPanel, integrating alternatives becomes much more complicated. Also, less than 5% of our customers still use PHP4, and more often than not they are copies of old versions of their websites that still reside on our servers.
Evolution
We currently support PHP5.2 on our servers. PHP5.3 and 5.4 are still not available but are in our target. That is a completely independent project that requires many tests to make sure all our customers are not affected by the deployment of the newer versions. It is unfortunately impossible to run PHP5.2 and 5.3/5.4 simultaneously which would have been the perfect solution.
