How .CA Helps Give Back to Canada

When you register a .CA domain, you’re doing more than putting a Canadian identity on your website. You are becoming part of Canada’s internet. CIRA’s role doesn’t stop at managing domain names. Through a program called Net Good by CIRA, revenue generated through dot CA domains and CIRA’s cybersecurity services helps support projects, communities and policies designed to make Canada’s internet more accessible, safer and stronger.

What is Net Good?

CIRA created Net Good to bring together initiatives that address some of Canada’s most important digital challenges.

The program focuses on three major areas:

  • Infrastructure
  • Online safety
  • Policy engagement

CIRA also provides grants to community-led organizations working on these issues across Canada.

Helping more Canadians get connected

CIRA’s Net Good program helps communities across Canada overcome barriers to reliable internet access. Quebec is part of this effort, with CIRA encouraging projects that address connectivity and digital inclusion in the province.

In addition to improving internet access, Quebec-funded initiatives have focused on helping people use the internet safely and confidently. For example, CIRA has supported Quebec organizations developing French-language digital safety resources, and projects led with Indigenous youth.

In 2026, CIRA continues this work with Digital Moment, a Quebec-based organization that develops bilingual AI-literacy resources for younger students.

Also, CIRA funded Idée éducation entrepreneuriale (IDÉE), a Quebec organization, for Cyberbalado, an online-safety project developed with students. Students created French-language educational content and podcasts addressing issues such as cyberbullying, phishing, malware, surveillance, hacking and misinformation

From connectivity to digital skills, Net Good helps Quebec communities build a more accessible and inclusive digital future.

Helping Canadians stay safer online

People need to know how to use the internet safely. Cyberattacks, phishing, scams, misinformation, cyberbullying, and other online threats continue to pose challenges for individuals, families, businesses, and communities.

Net Good supports initiatives that help Canadians develop the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the digital world more safely.

CIRA’s own Canadian Shield is another example of its broader work in online safety. It is a free public DNS service designed to help protect users in Canada from malware and phishing.

CIRA Grants have also supported community-led online safety education.

Projects have included initiatives that help young people understand cybersecurity, misinformation, online exploitation, and emerging digital risks.

Supporting stronger digital communities

The internet isn’t simply technology. It’s also communities, education, culture, businesses, research and public participation.

This community-led approach is particularly important when addressing digital barriers.

CIRA’s 2026 Net Good Grants reflect this approach. CIRA is investing $1.25 million in 15 community-led projects, with initiatives expected to benefit more than 130,000 people. The projects address connectivity, online safety, digital sovereignty, platform governance and AI-related issues.

Helping shape Canada’s digital future

The internet is shaped not only by technology but also by policies, regulations, standards and decisions about how digital infrastructure and services should work. CIRA supports policy engagement intended to promote a trusted internet in Canada and internationally.

Helping more Canadians get connected

How much has CIRA invested?

CIRA currently reports that its Net Good Grants have funded $15.45 million in community investment over 260 projects across Canada. In 2026 alone, CIRA announced $1.25 million for 15 initiatives.

So what does your .CA have to do with it?

Net Good is funded from revenue generated through .CA domains and cybersecurity services.

So when Canadians build websites using .CA, that ecosystem contributes to an organization whose mandate extends beyond domain registration.

A .CA can represent:

  • Canadian identity
  • Canadian internet infrastructure
  • Online safety
  • Community investment
  • Digital innovation
  • A Canadian voice in internet policy

Of course, registering a .CA domain doesn’t mean that your individual domain registration is earmarked for a particular project. Rather, CIRA uses revenue from its .CA and cybersecurity activities to fund Net Good initiatives.
