Then starts the headache of finding the current owner and recuperating management rights.

Why Is This Important?

A domain name can be as important as your own name or your business’ name. It’s an identity that drives traffic to your site, and in web terms, traffic translates to currency. As the owner of a domain name, you want to make sure that you always have control over your domain, and that no one tries to take away that name from you and use it for their own purposes.

How to Verify Contact Details

If you wish to know more about the types of contacts there exists for your domain name, this article from our Knowledge Base should help you out.

To verify what are the current contacts of your domain name, your best bet will be to start with a WHOIS lookup. There are many sites dedicated to performing domain name lookups, but the output is fairly similar from site to site since ICANN recently regulated how whois data information should be displayed. You can start by using the one on the Funio site.

If you are looking up anything other than .com, .net or .org, it is recommended you do a whois lookup directly on the registry site. For example, if you want to lookup a .CA domain name, use CIRA’s tool here.

More details on the whois lookup can be found in our knowledge base.

A note on whois privacy

Sometimes, you will not see the real contact information because there is contact privacy enabled on the domain. This is a standard purchasable feature for most top-level domains. Here is an example of what you would see in comparison:

The only way to know the real contact information is if you manage the domain name. If you do, simply go to your administrative interface to view and manage your contacts. With Funio, you would find your domain names in the Customer Hub.

If you are looking for the person that owns the domain name and you wish to contact them, you have two alternatives.

Hope that the whois privacy address is an alias. That’s right! That email might actually work and the contact would receive the email you wish to send them. In fact, this is a feature offered with Funio’s privacy option.

Contact the domain registrar and ask to forward your message to the domain name’s registrant or admin contact. Don’t even try to ask them what the contact information is.

Not The Owner Of Your Domain Name?

If your name, your company’s name, or whichever name you believe should be displayed in the “Registrant” section, is not the one you see, there are several things you can do to amend that.

First off, if you have access to the administrative interface of your domain name through your registrar (with Funio, that would be the Customer Hub), just log in and change it. Because a registrant modification is serious business, your domain may be locked for 60 days after the modification, meaning that you cannot change the registrant contact again or transfer your domain to another registrar during that period.

If you do not have management access to the domain, and you are not the administrative contact of the domain, do you know the person or company that’s name is listed? Most web developers, designers, consultants, etc. will often register the domain name for you and put their own name. They sometimes don’t know that your name should be the registrant, nor are they aware of the legal ramifications behind this. They would generally be very cooperative in modifying the registrant contact without a problem, in hopes that you are still in good terms with them.

However, if you encounter a shady developer, they might have done this purposely as a means to hold you hostage to their services, fees and/or making it difficult to switch providers. If they do not cooperate, there are resources out there that can help you take action.

How To Resolve Disputed Domain Name Ownership

When you don’t have access to the management of the domain, and that the person who does is not cooperating, you will need to get the registrar to change the data for you. Note that a registrar cannot cancel, suspend or transfer a domain name without the consent of the registrant or a court order. Your first action should be to contact the registrant and request to relinquish the domain over to you.

Refusal or lack of response within reasonable delays will lead you to contact ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and settle the manner using the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). The UDRP has a quick and affordable process where you issue an official complaint through an approved provider. A list can be found here.

You will need to be able to prove:

that your name or business is legally recognized as the domain owner through identical or near identical as the domain name.

that the current registrant has no legitimate rights to the domain name.

that there has been abuse or misconduct.

Most cases are resolved through mutual agreement, court or voluntary arbitration, but almost always results in transferring back the domain to the owner.

Funio Domain Name Management

If you need to manage the contacts of your domain names registered with Funio, simply go to your Customer Hub and edit your contacts from there. There is also a Bulk feature on the right-hand side if you have multiple domain names you wish to modify simultaneously.

In light of recent ICANN and CIRA regulation modifications that further forces domain owners to keep their domain contacts up to date, we thought it would be a good time to discuss domain registration ownership, how to verify it and make sure you are the rightful owner of your domain name.
