This may seem like a sudden modification, but in fact, we have been contemplating this switchover for a while, and finally took the opportunity to do the seamless replacement at the same time we upgraded PHP on all our servers.

Why MariaDB?

First, a bit of history: in April 2009, Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems (the company who owned MySQL). Uncertainty brewed in the developer community, which led the original founder of MySQL and a strong open-source believer, Michael “Monty” Widenius, to create a “drop-in” replacement called MariaDB. Therefore, the initial goal of MariaDB is to be 100% compatible with MySQL, and then add new features, clear up bugs (as usual) and improve performances.

Secondly, Funio has been setting up servers for many years now, and unfortunately we could not always keep the MySQL version up to date on our older servers. With the implementation of MariaDB, all our servers are now standardized with the same, most recent production ready version of MariaDB (5.5).

No Impact

For our customers, this switchover means no impact, no behavioural change and nothing lost. Our everyday shared hosting customers will probably never notice the change, especially since MariaDB is a drop-in replacement of MySQL, which means that it responds to the same calls, architecture and programming.

We’ve already rolled out the switchover to MariaDB; have you noticed any negatives or positives?

But Really… Why Switching?

Because we have a use for MariaDB features, especially when it comes to performance. If database performances are superior, our customers also benefit from the change. Here are some of the elements we considered and convinced us to go forward:

MariaDB is a MySQL fork. In other words, it has the same core and supports all the same features as MySQL, in addition to continue its evolution in parallel with MySQL.

Shows promising efficiency and performance levels superior to MySQL. Our team made their own benchmarks to see if the word on the web was true. The test results were indeed quite conclusive.

Funio mostly uses open source software, from our Operating system to PHP.

It’s closer to the original ideologies of MySQL, which are not necessarily those of Oracle. For example, since Oracle took over, security patch information is not disclosed, meaning that they do not provide any data on the modifications they make when vulnerabilities are found. MariaDB remains completely Open in every aspect

It’s future proof. In fact, Fedora (since version 19) has implemented MariaDB by default. Other Linux distributions have done the same, such as openSUSE, Slackware, Arch Linux, etc. The next version of RedHat Enterprise Linux (one of the major Linux distributions) will be based off Fedora 19 and will therefore use MariaDB by default.

More Information?

If you want the whole spiel on the differences between MariaDB and MySQL, this page should have everything you are looking for.

All in all, Funio believes that MariaDB is THE future relational database management system that everyone will need to support. As a drop-in replacement for MySQL, it has all the features everyone’s been used to, is being developed further with additional platform support, and already showing promising performance results.

Since December 5th 2013, we have been replacing MySQL with MariaDB.
